Tungsten steel grade YG naming rules

The main components of tungsten-cobalt cemented carbide are tungsten carbide (WC) and binder cobalt (Co). 

The grade is composed of “YG” (the initials of the Chinese pinyin of “hard and cobalt”) and the percentage of average cobalt content.


YG8 means average WCo=8%, and the rest is tungsten-cobalt cemented carbide of tungsten carbide.

YG8 cemented carbide is known as Wanjin Oil, which is a very versatile cemented carbide brand.

The production process of YG8 mainly includes ingredients → fully mixed → crushing → drying → adding forming agent after sieving → re-drying → sieving to obtain a mixture → granulating and pressing the mixture → forming → low-pressure sintering → sintered blank → inspection ( Non-destructive ultrasonic flaw detection)→Rough dimensional accuracy inspection.

The main physical parameters of YG8 cemented carbide are as follows:

Density g/cm 3: 14.6.
Hardness: 89.5.0HRA.
Flexural strength: 2320MPa.
Elastic modulus: 510GPa.
Coefficient of thermal expansion 10-6/OC: 5.1.
Co content: 8.0%.
Grain size: 1.0um.

YG8 cemented carbide is a commonly used brand of cutting tools and is the most used brand of cemented carbide inserts customized for mechanical production and processing. Of course, YG8 cemented carbide is also selected for wear-resistant molds and parts for its good wear resistance.

YG8 cemented carbide products have the characteristics of high hardness, high wear resistance, high red hardness, good weldability, etc., and excellent comprehensive performance, suitable for processing solid wood, density board, gray cast iron, chilled cast iron, stainless steel and other materials.


YG6 means average WCo=6%, and the rest is tungsten-cobalt cemented carbide of tungsten carbide.

YG6 performance and purpose:

The use strength and impact toughness are good, and the wear resistance is good. It is suitable for drawing steel, non-ferrous metal and alloy bars with a diameter of less than 20 mm under high stress conditions, and also suitable for drawing pipes with a diameter of less than 10 mm. It is suitable for the production of cold heading, cold punching and cold pressing molds for standard parts and bearings.
